Scandinavian music evenings in Budapest
Nordic House Foundation is proud to present you the highlight of this year's events: the Scandinavian Music evenings in Budapest.
Consisting of 8 lectures and concerts, this musical project aims to introduce the history of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and - with the contribution of Finnagora - Finnish music, and to emphasize the variety and diversity of these nation's music by presenting the less known composers as well as the world-famous ones.
The first four concerts of the series focus on the history of classical music in Scandinavia. These concerts will be held at the prominent Ferencsik Hall of Bartók Béla Conservatory. Besides the well-known masters like Edvard Grieg, Carl Nielsen or Jean Sibelius, the audience will get the chance to hear works by composers like Carl Ludvig Lithander, Geirr Tveitt or Gösta Nyström, whose art is almost unknown in Hungary.
The host, narrator and one of the participants of the concerts is Anastasia Razvalyaeva, a young harpist who is a determined populariser of Scandinavian music. The participants of the concerts are all young and talented musicians, graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy, and the outstanding Amadeus Choir.
The dates of the concerts are the following:
October 31st History of Swedish classical music
November 28th History of Norwegian classical music
December 19 th History of Finnish classical music
January 16th History of Danish classical music
The second four concerts of the series focus on the history of other genres. While the autumn/winter concerts feature Hungarian musicians, the performers of the spring concerts are coming from Scandinavia.
In February, the history of Scandinavian folk music will be presented by a Norwegian lecturer, who will be accompanied by folk musicians and dancers, also coming from Norway. Ballad and song/visa singing is very popular in Scandinavia. A young group from Sweden will introduce it to the Hungarian audience in March. In April, the history of Scandinavian jazz will be lectured on by a Danish jazz player, and additionally demonstrated by a Danish jazz trio. The closing concert of the series will be in May, a young Finnish DJ is coming to present the history of the Scandinavian popular music. The spring concerts will be held in different places. Scientific Evenings
What comes in our mind when we hear the word: SCANDINAVIA: Snow, sauna, order, clean, endless forests, welfare, Vikings, H.C. Andersen, and Santa Claus. Scandinavia is an entirely different world. The scientific evenings’ goal is to introduce a piece of this culture once in a month from October till May, focusing more on its society, identity and economy. We would be glad if the people attracted by Scandinavia could learn more about this area, could ask their questions, and practice the examples they find useful.
Our evenings are going to be held by foreign performers (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish). We are having negotiations with Henning Dochweiler – the former director of Askov Folkehøjskole, the editor in chief of the Swedish EXPO newspaper (formerly led by Stieg Larsson), the Gothenburg-award – Environmental Nobel-prize winner of 2009 Søren Hermansen, and other Hungarian lecturers.
The topics of the series are the following:
20th October 2010 the Scandinavian model
17th November 2010 Black gold on North – economical development of Norway after discovering the oil
15th December 2010 Then and Now – the Scandinavian welfare state
12th January 2011 NGOs – the civil culture in Scandinavia
16th February 2011 CSR
16th March 2011 Liberty of the Press – the Danish cartoon crise
20th April 2011 Scandinavian identity
18th May 2011 the Swedish Radical Right
The advanced budget of these programs is 500.000HUF which contains the rental of the rooms, the performers’ (Hungarian and foreign) honorary and the travelling costs of the foreign ones. For these we are looking for sponsors. It is possible to sponsor the series itself or the events you like.

The Foundation wholeheartedly supports the promotion of Scandinavian culture. As part of it a series of Scandinavian Crime Stories have already been introduced with authors – such as the world famous Stieg Larsson or Jo Nesbo – whose books have been published in Hungarian.
In the current season the Foundation is planning to organize a monthly event – from October 2010 until May 2011 – dedicated to contemporary Scandinavian literature.
These literary evenings would consist of a moderated talk with a guest (translator, publisher, author), an actor/actress contributing to the event as well. Among the authors we may find Morten Ramsland, Carl Östergren, Per Petterson or Knud Romer.
Depending on available sources and other facilities presenting a newly published book is also in accordance with our plans. We are also planning to invite one of the authors for a discussion.

Library
The Foundation would like to promote the Scandinavian Culture in various ways. A main field of that kind of promotion would be an establishment of the library. We have already organized many literary events. Furthermore now it is possible to buy some Hungarian translated works of many Scandinavian authors at the office of the Foundation. Based on these successful activities, we would like to take a more central position in the promotional field of Scandinavian languages, literatures and cultures, by making a library.
The collection of the library will be based on some selected works by the following topics:
- Scandinavian Literature
- Scandinavian History
- Scandinavian Culture, Scandinavian Studies
- Handbooks in the fields of literature and history, reference works and dictionaries
The acquisition process would be maintained by some volunteers (by Hungarian origin) living in the Scandinavian countries. The management and service tasks related to the library holding would be based on the activities by some volunteers that are working for the Foundation in Hungary.
Budget Plan for the Library:
- Shelf-system at the Foundation Office: 100.000HUF
- Document delivery from Scandinavia into Hungary: 150.000HUF

The Library gets the name of the sponsor (for example: Scandinavian Library by the promotion of XY-Sponsor’s name)
We can advertise the sponsor logo on the library related offline posters, bulletins, newsletters, and using its ad banner by the online library promotional work.
Theatre programs
One of our planned programs is a series of theatre visits. One of the Foundations most popular events was a common theatre visit (Knut Hamsun: Hunger, November 2009) followed by a talk with the creators of the performance. Fortunately Budapest abounds in theatres and in a number of them there are always some dramas of Nordic authors performed - both classic ones like Ibsen or Strindberg and modern ones like Lene Knutzon.
The plan is to arrange 3 theatre events a year. After an agreement with the hosting theatre the Foundation is offering discount on the ticket price and promotes the performance through its newsletter to the people interested. After the performance some of the creators (dramaturge, director, actors etc.) are asked to stay and have a talk about the play with the audience, while refreshments are served.
Budget:
Pr event app. 115.000 HUF
Counting with 3 events a year app. 350.000 HUF/year
Extraordinary cost - inviting one of the authors
From Scandinavia app. 150.000 HUF
For sponsoring the event the Foundation can offer the followings:
- The series be named after the sponsor (’X’ Theatre Evenings or Theatre Evenings sponsored by ’X’)
- Displaying the sponsor’s logo and banner together with the news of the series on the homepage of the Foundation and in newsletters.
