SKANDINÁV HÁZ ALAPÍTVÁNY (NORDIC HOUSE FOUNDATION)

The Nordic House Foundation was established in autumn 2003 by some Scandinavians living in Hungary and some Hungarians who have special interest for Scandinavia. It was not the first initiative of this kind; many people had planned creating a forum for Scandinavian culture in Hungary before.

The permanent public aim of the Foundation is to support cultural activities, to promote the development of cultural relations between Hungary and the Nordic countries (Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden).

The Nordic House Foundation realises its permanent public aim with the following particular activities:

• the diffusion of cultural and language knowledge by organising exhibitions, concerts, book presentations, film clubs, dance and theatre pieces
• the transmission of the knowledge about social and economical circumstances by informative brochures, seminars and lectures
• organising educational programs, research studies and scholarships between the Nordic countries and Hungary
• the promotion of experience and information exchange between the public administration units, local authorities, business associations, civil organisations and citizens of Hungary and the Nordic countries by a mediatory and advisory activity
• the spread of know-how and technology of the Nordic countries and Hungary by fairs, conferences, exhibitions
• distribute information on tourism concerning Hungary and the Nordic countries through various tourist events
• according to its possibilities it makes Hungary more popular in the Nordic countries
• the Foundation is also interested in exploring means that help to reach its aim, in benefiting from external supports and in dispensing grants

The Nordic House Foundation has 3 target groups:

1. Hungarian people, companies, organisations and authorities who would like to know more about the Scandinavian countries; their culture, history, language, education system, political system, economical structure and cooperation possibilities;
2. Scandinavian visitors, companies and authorities who need general or specific information, knowledge or help in Hungary;
3. Scandinavian citizens who stay or live in Hungary for a shorter or longer period and Scandinavian companies and organizations that have the possibility to participate on cultural business or club events.

Planned activity areas:

• Library (issuing and sales, translations, literary arrangements)
• Events (culture/business: music, dance, theatre, exhibitions, movies, conferences, clubs)
• Restaurant/Café/Delicatessen (the Nordic cuisine: cooking courses, product presentations)
• Children’s Club (playhouse, song, music, theatre, family events)
• Business Centre (“rent a desk”, exhibitions, fairs, business meetings)
• Lectures and courses (language courses, culture, politics and business)
• INFO and tourism (homepage, newsletter, tourist information)

Since the Foundation doesn’t have a residence, all ideas and suggestions are very welcome that can help in creating a real “Nordic House”. Until that time we are using other locations. After a long break the activists of the Foundation start working with all their might from September. Everybody are welcome to the events of the Foundation. Information about the events can be found on the homepage or in the newsletter.
